Many types of research data have been collected and stored at Black Rock Forest since its creation by Dr. Ernest Stillman in 1929. Early data collections include tree species inventories by stand, age, composition and volume (1929), and tree growth records of species, density, diameter, basal area, canopy class, and biomass (from 1931).
These data sets and the 46 Black Rock Forest Papers and Bulletins published between 1930 and 1975 comprise the Calvin Whitney Stillman Research Archive. Calvin Stillman was one of Ernest Stillman’s three sons and a professor of environmental resources at Rutgers University. The archive is dedicated to his memory, and is made available online courtesy of members of the Stillman family.
