Black Rock Forest needs your help estimating our deer population!
Each spring, Black Rock Forest staff conduct a deer pellet count survey by walking transects in the Forest to collect data and count deer pellets. This survey enables staff researchers to then estimate deer density in BRF as well as the impact that deer have on forest regeneration and biodiversity.
Volunteers will receive basic orienteering training, learn the sampling methods and collect data of their own by walking in teams (using Avenza Maps) along an off-trail transect of 1-2 miles of various terrains. This is a unique opportunity that allows volunteers to explore new areas of the Forest all while contributing to science!
Instructions: We recommend dressing in layers to account for varying temperatures throughout the day. Hiking or walking shoes are critical for going off-trail and trekking poles (if owned) may be useful. Bring protective eye-wear (can be sunglasses; safety goggles are available on a first come first served basis due to a limited supply). Bring drinking water and snack if desired. Insect and tick repellent are recommended. An email will be sent to registered participants prior to the event with parking information and additional arrival details.
This event is free.
