Please join us for a fun-filled day in Black Rock Forest — learn about forest critters and plants, hike the trails with a guide, plant some flowers, create art, do yoga under the trees, or fish at Sutherland Pond! Come experience Black Rock Forest!
FUN DAY EVENTS:
All events are free but pre-registration is required for each event (spots are limited). Participants are welcome to register for multiple events. Note- events during the same time period are at different locations, please register for one event per time slot. If you or your guest(s) plan to participate in different events, kindly register each person separately. Shuttle service within the Forest will be provided from the Science Center parking area. Event details will be sent prior to the event. No pets please.

- Pond Life: PROGRAM FULL email info@blackrockforest.org to be placed on the waiting list. – Explore Pond Life and dip netting with a Black Rock Forest Educator at Aleck Meadow Reservoir.
1pm-3:00pm
- Conservation Collage: Learn to make a Conservation Collage with Dr. Hanna Makowski, our Post-
- Planting Natives: Join the Wild Woods Restoration Project Team in planting native plants in our new Native Pollinator Garden. Event held outside the Moretti Education Center.
- History Talk: Listen to John Brady, our Historian, talk about the history of Black Rock and see some of the artifacts which were recently identified and catalogued by archaeologist Dana Linck. Event will be held at the tent at the Stone House. (allow for travel time)
1pm-4pm
- Autumn Angling: PROGRAM FULL @1PM; REGISTRATION IS NOW FOR 2:30; Fish with Aaron Culotta, our Environmental Educator, at Sutherland Pond. Bring your own rod & reel or borrow one from BRF on this NYS Free Fishing Day. This event will run continuously – drop in any time (allow time to travel)
1pm-5pm
- Scenic Hike: Meet at Mailley’s Bridge and hike some of Black Rock Forest’s scenic peaks with our Office Manager, Susanne Vondrak. This four-hour event will cover rugged terrain and requires appropriate footwear for trail hiking. See below for additional hikes at 3pm.
3pm-4pm
- Yoga: Stretch your body and soul with gentle lawn yoga on the Science Center lawn with Board member Lotus Do, ERYT. Please bring your own mat and wear comfortable clothes.
- Bobcat Ecology: Learn about bobcats with our Director of Research, Dr. Scott LaPoint. He will demonstrate trapping and tracking techniques used in Black Rock Forest. This event will be held at the tent at the Stone House (allow time for travel).
3pm-5pm
- Paint and Hike: Hike the Educator Path around Upper Reservoir with Dr. Jessica Schnell, Director of Education, and capture the beauty of the landscape with watercolors. Materials provided. Meet at the Education Gardens by the Forest Lodge.
- Biodiversity Hike: Walk with Board member Dr. Terryanne Maenza-Gmelch, Barnard Professor of Environmental Science and learn about the diverse flora and fauna on Sibyl’s Path. Meet at Mailley’s Bridge.
5:00-6:00pm
- Conservation Lecture: Culminate your day with a presentation by Dr. Scott LaPoint, sponsored by the David Redden Conservation Science Lecture Series. Dr. LaPoint, Black Rock Forest’s Director of Research, will speak about landscape connectivity, wildlife corridors, and his work to understand animal movement in the Hudson Highlands. Event will be held in the Lodge Atrium.
