OBFS Members: 2008 Annual Meeting Information and Registration

The Black Rock Forest Consortium is a unique alliance of colleges and universities, public and independent K-12 schools, and leading scientific and cultural institutions that operates the nearly 4000-acre Black Rock Forest, located 50 miles north of New York City in the Hudson Highlands, as a field station for scientific research, education, and conservation. The Forest features dramatic topography with over 1000 feet of relief, numerous lakes and streams, and high habitat and species diversity.

Activities include faculty and doctoral research, staff and teacher training, undergraduate education and research, and elementary, middle, and high school programs. The Consortium also emphasizes ecological resource management, “green” and “smart” construction, and environmental monitoring.

Field station facilities include the Center for Science and Education, with laboratory, teaching, and computer areas; the Forest Lodge and the Old Headquarters Building for overnight visitors and conferences; and a Solar Pavilion that provides protected outdoor learning and gathering space.Less than a mile into the Forest, the Science Center, Forest Lodge, and Pavilion enjoy spectacular views; all use green building techniques and serve as models for sustainable design principles and technologies, with award-winning environmental features.

Help support the Forest by joining the Green Ride, a three-day, 260-mile bike ride from upper Manhattan to the Catskills and back over the Columbus Day weekend, October 11-13.  Last year's inaugural ride raised nearly $50,000 for the Forest and its education programs.
